Jaguar XE Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth Problems
On the XE a Bluetooth connection that keeps dropping is nearly always the phone's software, not the car. Bring the phone fully up to date before anyone touches the head unit. CarPlay that asks you to plug in a phone that's already plugged in is usually an iPhone USB setting or a tired cable.
How bad is it · Safe to drive
Safe to drive — it's an annoyance, not a fault that spreads
Nothing else on the car depends on the phone link. The risk is paying a dealer to reload software when the fix is on the phone.
Which one applies to yours depends on your symptoms, your model year and what has already been done to it.
Likely causes, most common first
Read the check cost before the odds: a free check that rules a cause out beats a likely guess that costs money.
A phone software update that broke the Bluetooth link
Several Android releases (7.1.x, 8.0/8.1, Samsung's Android 9) shipped with Bluetooth stacks that don't get on with the XE's InControl Touch. The car is fine; the phone drops the call profile and the car keeps re-connecting.
It started right after the phone updated. It drops and reconnects for the first few minutes of every drive, the Bluetooth tick box in the car's settings unticks itself, and music on its own stays connected.
Untick phone calls for the car in the phone's Bluetooth settings and leave media on. If the link now holds, the phone's call profile is the problem.
Keep running the phone's system update until nothing more is offered. One Samsung on Android 9 was cured only by going back to Android 8.0, and a 7.1.x phone by the 7.1.2 update.
An app blocking the phonebook connection
The car asks for contacts as part of the phone connection. If an app on the phone holds that back, the connection fails and starts again in a loop.
The phone suddenly asks again for permission to share contacts after a few drop-outs, or the loop began after a new app went on.
Look for apps that manage contacts or connected devices. On Samsung phones SmartThings is the first one to suspect.
Remove the app, then grant contacts access when the phone asks. On some Android phones a phonebook app left running in the background is worth trying.
iPhone USB Accessories switched off
Once an iPhone has been locked for about an hour, it shuts off USB data unless USB Accessories is allowed. The car sees a charging phone with no data and asks for it to be plugged in.
CarPlay asks you to plug in the phone while it's plugged in and charging. It connects as soon as you unlock the phone.
On the iPhone: Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > USB Accessories.
Turn USB Accessories on. A dealer software reload doesn't change this.
A worn cable or a bad USB port
CarPlay and Android Auto on the XE run only over USB data. A cable with a loose contact charges fine but drops the data, and phone updates have made some older cables unusable.
Random drop-outs while driving, a request to re-plug the phone, sometimes worse over bumps.
Try a new genuine cable, then the other USB port.
Replace the cable, even if it's fairly new. That alone cured random drop-outs for both CarPlay and Android Auto.
Android Bluetooth settings that make it worse
Some Android settings change how the phone talks to the car: the AVRCP version, battery saving on Bluetooth, two different names on the phone. None is a sure cure, but each has settled a loop.
Updates haven't helped and the phone is a Pixel or another phone that drops more than others.
In Developer options set Bluetooth AVRCP Version to 1.3 and the codec to SBC, then restart the phone. Turn battery optimisation off for Bluetooth. Make the Bluetooth name and the device name the same.
Worth trying one at a time. Turning media audio off for the car and keeping calls makes drop-outs much rarer, at the cost of streaming.
The order to check them in
The point of the order is money: each step either rules a cause out or makes the next one worth doing. Green is free, amber costs a little, red is the one to arrive at last.
When did it start?
If it began after the phone updated, start with the phone. If it began after a dealer visit, ask what software went on the car.
freeUpdate the phone all the way
Run the system update again and again until no more is offered.
freeCalls off, media on
If music alone holds, the call profile or contacts access is the problem: check contacts permission and apps that manage it.
freeiPhone: USB Accessories on
Then plug the phone in after the screen has finished starting up, not before.
freeNew cable, other port
A genuine cable in good condition, tried in both USB ports.
a cableDelete and re-pair
Remove the pairing on both the phone and the car, then pair again.
freeDealer software update
Only once the phone side is ruled out. It has cured a loop on InControl Touch, and on another phone it started one.
