Jaguar XE Infotainment Freezing, Blank Screen
On the XE most infotainment freezes are software. A black screen right after a quick stop usually means the system hadn't finished shutting down — lock the car and give it a proper sleep. Lost settings are cured by deleting personal data, and frequent crashes by a dealer software update.
How bad is it · Safe to drive
Safe to drive, but don't rely on the parking sensors while it's frozen
The parking-sensor tones play through the infotainment. When it locks up they can go silent too, so reverse by eye.
Which one applies to yours depends on your symptoms, your model year and what has already been done to it.
Likely causes, most common first
Read the check cost before the odds: a free check that rules a cause out beats a likely guess that costs money.
Corrupted personal data
The stored profile data can become corrupt. The system then loses presets and navigation settings, or misbehaves after updates.
Radio presets and navigation settings wiped, first now and then and later at every switch-off. A new battery changes nothing.
Settings, then delete all personal data, then set everything up again.
Deleting all personal data and re-entering the settings stopped the losses for good. On Pivi Pro, clearing the accounts and logging in again brings things back until the next update.
Restarted before it finished shutting down
The head unit needs time to close down after the car is switched off. Start again too soon, after refuelling for instance, and it can come up confused.
Black screen or a hang on the Jaguar logo after a short stop, while the reversing camera may still show. It comes back by itself within seconds or minutes.
Switch off, wait a few seconds with the door shut, and start again. Plug the phone in only after the screen has started up.
A clean restart clears it. If it happens every time, ask for the software update.
Old infotainment software
Touch Pro software from 2017 and 2018 crashed often. Later releases, including the 2018 update and S19B, fixed the black-screen crashes and added CarPlay and Android Auto.
Regular black screens, slow or dead media, sources not remembered, and the car still on early software.
Ask a dealer which software version is on the car. On 19A the car may say it's up to date until the dealer pushes S19B.
A dealer update cut the crashes to rare, then stopped them. The update can take days from old software, and a few cars end up with a new master controller unit.
Glitches that clear after a full sleep
Some faults survive a restart but go once every module has gone to sleep. A car that never gets over-the-air updates may also need its communications module reset.
Volume stuck low, no audio, USB drops, the phone app saying the car is asleep.
Lock the car and leave it about 15 minutes, then try again.
Worth trying first, but it only buys time. The lasting fix is a communications module reset and a software update at the dealer.
Pivi Pro faults after an over-the-air update
On 2020-on cars with Pivi Pro, an update can leave profiles or logins broken. A dealer can reload the operating system and software.
After an update: no InControl login in the car, a blank rear camera view, the USB stick slow to start, the cluster map missing.
Clear the accounts and log in again. If the in-car login fails, ask the dealer about service action H494.
A full Pivi Pro operating-system reload by the dealer brought one car back to normal.
The order to check them in
The point of the order is money: each step either rules a cause out or makes the next one worth doing. Green is free, amber costs a little, red is the one to arrive at last.
Lock it and walk away
Switch off, lock, leave it about 15 minutes. Most freezes are gone after that.
freePhone in after start-up
Plug the phone in only once the screen has started up.
freeDelete all personal data
If settings keep vanishing. Note your presets first; you'll set them up again.
freeAsk which software it runs
On early Touch Pro, the update is the cure. Allow for the car staying at the dealer more than a day.
dealerPivi Pro: accounts, then the dealer
Clear accounts and log in again; if that doesn't hold, ask about H494 and an operating-system reload.
