Jaguar I-Pace No Sound, Speaker Problems

Total silence from every source on an I-Pace is rarely the speakers. It is usually the infotainment hanging, which a forced reboot clears, or on Touch Pro Duo cars the IMC module. If reboots help only for a while and a crackle, hiss or whine follows, the amplifier is failing — and it also makes the external pedestrian warning sound.

Drivable, but get a silent car looked at

The same amplifier produces the external pedestrian warning sound, and with it the indicator tick and parking-sensor tones can go. Without them the car is quieter to people around it than it should be.

This page covers the usual causes. The Doctor works on your car: describe what it does and what has already been replaced, and it narrows these down to your symptoms, model year and fuse layout — which check to do first, and what not to buy yet.

This page lists the usual causes — it is not a diagnosis of your car.

Which one applies to yours depends on your symptoms, your model year and what has already been done to it.

01

Likely causes, most common first

Read the check cost before the odds: a free check that rules a cause out beats a likely guess that costs money.

1

The infotainment has hung

The infotainment system routes all audio. When its software hangs, every source goes silent, and CarPlay or Android Auto may show a picture you can't operate. Nothing is broken.

How to tell

No source can be selected or none plays; screens and icons still light. Sometimes the radio plays silently while a downloaded update sits waiting to be installed.

How to check

On Pivi Pro, hold the infotainment power button in the centre of the volume knob for 10 to 20 seconds. If that doesn't take, hold it while pressing the Start button. On Touch Pro Duo, switch off and lock the car for about 10 minutes.

The fix

The forced reboot brought the sound and CarPlay back. Install any pending software update.

2

The IMC module on Touch Pro Duo cars

The infotainment master controller (IMC) feeds the amplifier. An internal fault silences audio on some start-ups and stores no fault codes, and a software reload alone doesn't cure it.

How to tell

On about half of start-ups or more: no audio, volume stuck or the radio frozen, the reversing beep silent, a front acoustic (pedestrian alert) warning, Wi-Fi faults. USB music and navigation prompts may still play while the radio is silent.

How to check

Look at the infotainment version: S19 or older needs updating, and the IMC has firmware the normal over-the-air update doesn't touch. With no codes, the dealer can check the IMC's wake-up line and 12 V feed at its connectors before condemning it.

The fix

A replacement IMC (T4N25164) with software updated to 20C1 and maps reinstalled. Read the invoice: an IMC replacement on paper may have been only an unlock and a reflash.

A failing amplifier: crackle, hiss or whine after the silences

The amplifier drives every speaker and the external vehicle sound. Failing, it first drops out completely now and then, cured for a while by a reboot, then adds noise to every source.

How to tell

Crackle like a Geiger counter, a hiss or a high-pitched whine that rises with volume, on DAB, streaming and CarPlay alike, the same whichever speakers the balance selects. Earlier, total silence including the indicator tick.

How to check

Move the balance and fader around: if the noise is the same everywhere, it isn't a speaker. Ask whether anything has been fitted that could cause interference.

Worth checking

Replacing the amplifier cured the crackle and the silences. It is worth doing promptly because of the pedestrian warning sound.

4

One speaker distorts or rattles

With a single speaker the cause is usually local: settings that push the door speakers too hard, or a part not refitted.

How to tell

Door speakers distorting at volume with heavy bass dialled in; a rattle from the passenger side on bad roads after the windscreen was replaced.

How to check

Bring the bass down and let the subwoofer do the work. After glass work, check the small A-pillar tweeter is clipped back in.

Worth checking

Worth trying: bass at about +1, treble 0, subwoofer near the top of its range; refit the tweeter.

02

The order to check them in

The point of the order is money: each step either rules a cause out or makes the next one worth doing. Green is free, amber costs a little, red is the one to arrive at last.

1

Change source and check mute

A minor hang can clear just by switching source. Check the steering-wheel mute.

2

Force a reboot

Pivi Pro: hold the power button in the volume knob 10 to 20 seconds, with Start pressed if needed. Touch Pro Duo: car off and locked for 10 minutes.

3

Bring the software up to date

Check the version in the software update screen and install anything pending.

4

Note what goes silent

Everything, chimes and parking tones included, points at the amplifier or IMC, not the speakers. USB and navigation still playing while the radio is silent points away from the amplifier.

5

Listen for noise across the speakers

A crackle, hiss or whine the same in every speaker is the amplifier, not a speaker.

Dealer: IMC firmware and checks

IMC firmware is a dealer update. With no fault codes, the IMC's supply and wake-up line are checked before it is replaced.

04

What it usually isn't

Don't spend money here first:

The speakers, when every source and every chime goes silent at once.
The phone or CarPlay, when the radio is silent too.

If none of this finds it:

If none of this finds it: steady popping from the front speakers that survives an IMC replacement points to the amplifier, the speaker wiring or software.
If none of this finds it: bass that cancels when the rear doors are faded in suggests a speaker wired out of phase at the rear door connectors.

None of these sound like your I-Pace?

Describe what yours does and what has already been replaced. The Doctor works through the same cases against your symptoms and model year, and tells you which check to do first.
