Jaguar XJ6 Series 3 Radio Code Refused
Late Series 3 cars have a Jaguar security radio that shows CODE after the battery has been off. After a few wrong tries it refuses even the correct code. I'd disconnect the battery for a minute, then key on, radio on and the code straight in; failing that, leave the radio on for an hour or more first.
How bad is it · Safe to drive
Safe to drive — only the radio is locked
More wrong attempts only lengthen the lockout, so stop guessing and reset it properly.
Which one applies to yours depends on your symptoms, your model year and what has already been done to it.
Likely causes, most common first
Read the check cost before the odds: a free check that rules a cause out beats a likely guess that costs money.
The radio is stuck in its lockout — reset it by power
After failed attempts the radio takes no code at all. It has no internal battery, so cutting its supply brings back a fresh CODE prompt.
The code is right, yet refused every time, even after long waits.
Disconnect the car battery for about a minute. Reconnect, key on, radio on, then enter the code in one go. A beep part-way means start again from the first digit.
The power reset, then key, radio and code in that order.
Wrong attempts — leave it on before trying again
After a few failed entries the radio stops accepting anything, even the correct code, until it has been powered for a while.
Several attempts made; the radio now ignores entries.
Ignition on, radio on, leave it an hour or more — or run the engine. Then enter the code once. A dealer sequence: radio on for an hour, everything off, then the code.
Worth trying: an hour or more powered, then one attempt. Check the number itself too — with the right one, the radio jumps to a preset on the last digit.
The order to check them in
The point of the order is money: each step either rules a cause out or makes the next one worth doing. Green is free, amber costs a little, red is the one to arrive at last.
Find the code
The card in the stereo folder, the owner's manual covers, or a sticker under the boot lid — on late cars possibly a bar code whose last four digits are the code.
freePower reset, then enter once
Battery off a minute; key on, radio on, code. A beep mid-way means start again from the first digit.
freeIf refused, leave it powered
An hour or more, radio on, before the next single attempt.
freeNo code at all: the serial to a dealer
The radio comes out (climate knobs, ring nuts, panel) to read the serial. If the looked-up code is refused, try a second lookup method.
