Jaguar E-Pace Touch Screen Not Working
On the E-Pace a touch screen that freezes, stays black or sits on the Jaguar logo is nearly always the infotainment software hanging, not broken hardware. Lock the car, walk away and give it 15–20 minutes: that is the only full reset the Touch Pro system has. If it keeps coming back, the cure is a dealer software update — and a weak 12 V battery makes all of it worse.
How bad is it · Safe to drive
Safe to drive — you lose the screen, not the car
Nothing mechanical depends on it. You may lose the reversing camera, navigation and parking display until the system restarts, so take care when manoeuvring.
Which one applies to yours depends on your symptoms, your model year and what has already been done to it.
Likely causes, most common first
Read the check cost before the odds: a free check that rules a cause out beats a likely guess that costs money.
The Touch Pro software has hung
The system only shuts down completely when the whole car goes to sleep. Turning the ignition off and on, or restarting the engine, doesn't reset it.
Screen frozen or black, the phone still controls music but the screen ignores touches, radio stuck on one station; worst on early 2018 cars.
Switch off, lock the car, walk away and wait 15–20 minutes — or leave it overnight.
The full shutdown brings it back. If it recurs often, the software update below is the real cure.
Reversing camera image stuck on the screen
A quick shift from reverse back to Drive could catch early Touch Pro software between the camera view and the media screen, and the screen froze there.
The still camera picture stays up after you've driven off and none of the touch buttons work; another time just a blank screen.
Cycling the ignition clears it each time — that confirms the pattern.
A dealer software update to the infotainment stops it happening.
Software too old to update itself
Early cars left the factory on software without the update menu, so they never receive over-the-air fixes. Later releases fixed a CarPlay screen that stayed frozen after the iPhone was unplugged, among other bugs.
The home screen has four panels instead of three, there's no Software Update menu, and Jaguar emails say an update is waiting while the car says it is up to date.
Look at the home screen layout, then cog icon > All settings > Software update on newer software.
Have the dealer install the newer software first. Report a concrete fault, such as a frozen screen, rather than asking for an update.
Driving off before the system has booted
If you start and drive away at once, the system can be left half-started. A blank screen at start-up that lasts longer in cold weather fits this.
Black screen or Jaguar logo for a long time after starting — for example over 20 minutes at 4 °C and about 14 at 13 °C; the app can't reach the car meanwhile.
Give the screen a minute to come up before pulling away and see whether the blank start-ups stop.
Worth trying first. If it carries on, a dealer diagnostic reboot or update; updates that only help for a few days point at a connector or the unit itself.
The order to check them in
The point of the order is money: each step either rules a cause out or makes the next one worth doing. Green is free, amber costs a little, red is the one to arrive at last.
Full shutdown: lock and walk away
Switch off, lock and alarm the car, take the key away and wait 15–20 minutes. There's no button reset on Touch Pro; ignition off and on doesn't count.
freeCheck the 12 V battery
If the car also gives low battery warnings, sort the battery first. A weak battery brings the black screen back after every reset.
free to testLook at the software
Four panels on the home screen means old software with no update menu: the dealer has to load the newer release. Three panels: look under All settings for Software update.
freeLet it boot before driving off
A minute with the screen coming up before you pull away avoids the half-started state.
freePivi Pro cars (from MY21): restore
On the later Pivi Pro system the factory restore can clear stubborn faults — run it more than once if the first doesn't hold. A reboot loop that blanks the instrument centre display is a dealer job.
freeRecurring after updates: a dealer diagnosis
If updates only hold for a few days, ask for the connectors and the unit itself to be checked under warranty.
