Jaguar E-Pace Stop Start Not Working

On the E-Pace stop/start most often stays off because the battery is below the charge it needs — the system is designed to give up first. Check the button by the gear selector isn't lit orange, then charge or test the battery. If the battery is good, ask the dealer to check the engine and coolant pump software.

Safe to drive — stop/start is a convenience

The car drives exactly the same without it. But a battery too weak for stop/start is the same battery that sets low battery warnings and, later, a no-start.

Get a diagnosis for your E-Pace

This page covers the usual causes. The Doctor works on your car: describe what it does and what has already been replaced, and it narrows these down to your symptoms, model year and fuse layout — which check to do first, and what not to buy yet.

This page lists the usual causes — it is not a diagnosis of your car.

Which one applies to yours depends on your symptoms, your model year and what has already been done to it.

01

Likely causes, most common first

Read the check cost before the odds: a free check that rules a cause out beats a likely guess that costs money.

1

Switched off, or the conditions aren't met

The button near the gear selector turns the system off, and it shows orange when it is off. The dash also says off when conditions don't allow a stop.

How to tell

Orange light on the stop/start button, or it only works some days: cold weather, the car just started, the heater working hard and low battery charge all hold it off.

How to check

Look at the button. If it's orange, press it once; there's no need to set it every trip.

The fix

Press the button so it isn't orange, and expect it to work only when the engine is warm and the battery is well charged.

2

Battery below the charge stop/start needs

Stop/start needs the battery at around 80% or more. Short runs, a car left standing, or a battery past three years keep it below that, and the system simply stays off.

How to tell

It never works, or stopped after weeks of little use; often with low battery warnings.

How to check

Full charge on a smart charger, then drive normally for a couple of weeks. If it still never engages, have the battery tested.

Worth checking

Charging, or a new AGM battery on an older car. A software fault draining the battery has also been fixed with the battery change.

3

Engine or coolant pump software

On pre-facelift cars stop/start behaviour is tied to the coolant pump software from the H291 update, and outdated engine control software can stop it too.

How to tell

Battery good, button not orange, yet it fails most of the time; or the dash says on, the stop light comes on at a halt and the engine keeps running.

How to check

Ask the dealer what software level the engine and coolant pump are on, and whether the H291 update has been done.

Worth checking

A water pump software update has brought stop/start back. Worth asking for the latest engine software before anything else is replaced.

The order to check them in

The point of the order is money: each step either rules a cause out or makes the next one worth doing. Green is free, amber costs a little, red is the one to arrive at last.

Look at the button

Orange means off. Press it once and it stays on for later trips.

2

Warm engine, mild weather, no heater on full

Try it once the engine is warm and the cabin heating has settled. In the cold, just after starting, it won't stop the engine.

3

Charge the battery fully

A smart charger overnight, then a couple of weeks of normal driving. Longer drives alone rarely get it full.

4

Battery test, then an AGM if it's tired

On a car three years old or more a new AGM battery is the usual answer when it never works. See the battery page for charging and the resets after fitting.

What it usually isn't

Don't spend money here first:

A faulty system, when the button is simply lit orange.
Stop/start that only works some days — that is normal behaviour in the cold or with a part-charged battery.
