Jaguar XJ8 (X308) CD Changer E-01 or NO DISC
NO DISC while you can hear the changer working means it has power and a link — the fault is inside. I'd start with the free fixes: lever a jammed magazine out, or push a gear back into mesh. A lost link shows NO CONT instead.
How bad is it · Safe to drive
Safe to drive — only the discs are at stake
Some top-cover screws are thread-locked — go carefully or you'll be drilling them out.
Which one applies to yours depends on your symptoms, your model year and what has already been done to it.
Likely causes, most common first
Read the check cost before the odds: a free check that rules a cause out beats a likely guess that costs money.
The magazine has jammed against the player
A disc carrier stuck half-way out locks the magazine in. The changer shows E-01 and won't eject, though nothing is broken; some displays show it as E001.
E-01 after selecting a disc; eject does nothing.
Open the sliding door; lever the magazine with a thin screwdriver while pressing eject, or slide a plastic strip under it to release the latch.
Free the magazine and it works again: a thin plastic strip slid toward the back of the player while holding eject pushes the disc home, or a thin hooked blade draws a stuck tray out. It tends to come back, sometimes from a worn magazine; if one slot keeps jamming, leave it empty.
A gear out of mesh, or stiff grease
One motor with a worm gear moves the discs. Hitting its end stop hard, the worm pushes the gear out of mesh; old grease stiffens in the cold.
It cycles slowly through all six discs, then NO DISC — often from a cold morning.
Changer out: left rear light cover, carpet, four bolts, plug. Case off; look for a gear off its worm, turn the motors by hand.
Push the gear back into mesh; clean and relubricate. A stuck magazine may need the shock absorbers out and the cog worked by hand.
Discs skip over bumps — the mounting
The player floats on four rubber dampers and two springs. One loose, and it loses its suspension.
Skipping on small bumps, bought discs too.
Open the changer and check all four dampers and both springs.
Refit what's loose. If they're sound, a few thin felt layers between bracket and upper boot panel — not enough to stiffen the mount.
Home-burned discs and an older laser
The factory laser dislikes recordable discs: slow to start, or never read.
Bought discs play; burned ones don't.
Test with pressed discs only.
Worth trying music-grade blanks; lens cleaning and slower burning may not help. A newer changer may read them.
A worn laser or spindle — a used or exchange changer
The disc reaches the player but won't spin or read: the spindle motor or laser is worn out.
NO DISC with the mechanism moving normally, after relubrication.
Rule out the jam and the gear first.
A used changer, or a factory-rebuilt exchange unit.

The order to check them in
The point of the order is money: each step either rules a cause out or makes the next one worth doing. Green is free, amber costs a little, red is the one to arrive at last.
