Which model years this covers

This pinout covers the XJ6 (XJ40) of 1993, 1994. One table serves every one of those years: within a head unit generation the connector and the wire colours do not change.

Other years of this model carry a different head unit — 1991 on LB33. See that pinout.

Common questions

Which wire is the 12 V constant on the XJ6 (XJ40) radio connector?

LB36 pin 11, wire colour NR (Brown with Red tracer). It stays live with the key out: this is the memory feed.

Which wire is the ignition switched live on the XJ6 (XJ40)?

LB36 pin 10, wire colour LGO (Light Green with Orange tracer). It goes live with the ignition and is what tells the head unit to switch on.

What are the speaker wire colours on the XJ6 (XJ40)?

LEFT FRONT SPEAKER: bass and tweeter — pin 1, SP; LEFT FRONT SPEAKER: bass and tweeter — pin 2, SR; LEFT REAR SPEAKER: bass and tweeter — pin 5, BS; LEFT REAR SPEAKER: bass and tweeter — pin 6, KP; RIGHT FRONT SPEAKER: bass and tweeter — pin 7, SK; RIGHT FRONT SPEAKER: bass and tweeter — pin 8, SO; RIGHT REAR SPEAKER: bass and tweeter — pin 13, BW; RIGHT REAR SPEAKER: bass and tweeter — pin 14, KG.

What connector does the XJ6 (XJ40) head unit use?

The head unit sits on LB36. Jaguar colour codes are not the aftermarket standard, so match an adapter by pin number, not by wire colour.

Notes and caveats

Earlier cars are wired differently. This table is for 1993 and 1994. Earlier cars have the radio on LB33 and share not one wire colour with the table above — those colours start with R and K, and the car has separate bass speakers. There are sheets for 1990 and for 1991, and the two differ from each other as well. A 1992 car may be either; identify the plug first.

Eight speakers, four channels. Each corner carries a bass unit and a tweeter. Every wire runs to a splice that feeds both, so a pair of pins here is one channel loaded by two speakers.

No ground pin. LB36 carries no ground. The radio grounds from its case through a GW wire and capacitor CE02 to the chassis.

Speaker polarity. Not marked.

* Pins 3, 9, 12. No wire on these terminals.

Antenna and CD changer. The antenna is on RS25 and the CD auto changer on RS23. Raising and lowering the antenna is handled by the central microprocessor; LB36-4 is the head unit's request line into it.

How the two supplies were read. The guide marks a supply by the shape around the number, not by words: a square is battery power and a diamond is ignition power. That is what tells pin 11 from pin 10 here — both are just a colour and a number on the drawing.

Which head unit is fitted

Head units this fits. Alpine — DBC11304 (AJ9200R), DBC11307 (AJ9200R, Daimler), DBC11303 (AJ9200W), DBC 2459, DBC6437. XJ6 / XJ12 / Vanden Plas (XJ40) 1993–1994. DBC11307 is the same unit as DBC11304 with Daimler branding. Sellers warn that these fit the battery-in-boot cars only, not the battery-under-bonnet ones.
