On the Jaguar XJ6 (XJ40) of 1990 the Radio sits on connectors LB33 and LB32. The constant 12 V feed is pin 1 (NW), ground is pin 3 (B). Wire colours are Jaguar factory codes.

  • Constant 12 V — LB32 pin 1, NW
  • Ground — LB32 pin 3, B

Which model years this covers

This pinout covers the XJ6 (XJ40) of 1990. One table serves every one of those years: within a head unit generation the connector and the wire colours do not change.

Other years of this model carry a different head unit — 1991 on LB33. See that pinout.

Other years of this model carry a different head unit — 1993–1994 on LB36. See that pinout.

Common questions

Which wire is the 12 V constant on the XJ6 (XJ40) radio connector?

LB32 pin 1, wire colour NW (Brown with White tracer). It stays live with the key out: this is the memory feed.

Which pin is the ground on the XJ6 (XJ40) head unit connector?

LB32 pin 3, wire colour B (Black).

What are the speaker wire colours on the XJ6 (XJ40)?

RIGHT REAR SPEAKER — pin 4, KY; RIGHT FRONT AND RIGHT REAR SPEAKER: common return — pin 5, KLG; RIGHT FRONT SPEAKER — pin 6, KW; RIGHT BASS SPEAKER — pin 7, KO; RIGHT BASS SPEAKER — pin 8, KR; LEFT REAR SPEAKER — pin 9, RN; LEFT FRONT AND LEFT REAR SPEAKER: common return — pin 10, RG; LEFT FRONT SPEAKER — pin 11, RW; LEFT BASS SPEAKER — pin 12, RP; LEFT BASS SPEAKER — pin 13, RLG.

What connector does the XJ6 (XJ40) head unit use?

The head unit sits on LB33 and LB32. Jaguar colour codes are not the aftermarket standard, so match an adapter by pin number, not by wire colour.

Notes and caveats

One book, one year. This is read from the 1990 MY guide alone. There is no second book to compare it with, so the year above is the year of the document, not a checked range.

Later cars differ, and the plug is the tell. On a 1991 car the radio sits on a 14-way LB33 in white, with the same wire colours but a different pin order and no separate power plug; from 1993 it moves to LB36 and shares no colour at all. There are sheets for both. The quickest check is the locate-lighting wire: YU here, RG on a 1991 car.

Power and ground are on the small plug. LB32 carries all three: battery, the switched supply and the only ground. LB33 carries audio and two signals, and no ground at all — its pins 5 and 10 are speaker returns, not grounds.

Speaker polarity. Not marked on the drawing.

* Pins 5, 10. Shared returns, and this is why the colours look repeated. Pin 10 is spliced and serves the left front and the left rear speaker together; pin 5 does the same on the right. Front and rear on one side cannot be separated at the head unit.

** Pins 7, 8, 12, 13. The two bass units are separate speakers in the rear footwells, on their own pairs — left on LS9, right on RS33. The other four speakers are in the doors.

*** Pin 2. Fed from the A/C and radio relay, through a choke at the radio end. The same wire feeds the climate control and the lights-on audible warning.
