Jaguar XK (X150) Starting Problems, Won't Crank
On the X150, a click and no crank is most often the starter itself — usually a remanufactured unit — or a battery too weak to wake the car's modules. I'd measure the battery first, then check the brake pedal switch and the starter fuse F19, and only then bench-test the starter before buying one.

The car won't move, and waiting won't make it worse
Nothing is being damaged while it sits. The cost lies in buying parts in the wrong order — a failed starter is often a remanufactured unit still under warranty.
Which one applies to yours depends on your symptoms, your model year and what has already been done to it.
Likely causes, most common first
Read the check cost before the odds: a free check that rules a cause out beats a likely guess that costs money.
The starter — very often a remanufactured one
The solenoid clicks in but the motor doesn't turn. Remanufactured starters are the usual suspects on these cars, and they often carry a lifetime warranty.
Everything else works — alarm, fob, gauges, heater fan, bright headlights — with no warning messages and no stored codes.
Jump it from another car and leave the leads on for a couple of minutes. No crank at all clears the battery and the alternator together; then feed power straight to the starter, or have it bench-tested at a parts counter.
Replace the starter. Take the old one back first — a lifetime warranty on a reman can make the exchange free.
A battery too weak to wake the car
The X150 needs healthy voltage before its modules will agree to a start. A weak battery can still light the dash and yet give only a click.
A screen full of warnings, Apply brake repeating and constant beeping; the boot won't open from its button and the key stays locked in the console slot. Roof and windows may stop mid-travel.
Read the battery six hours after the last charge or drive — you want 12.6 V. A new battery proves nothing until it's measured.
Fit a new battery — for example group 49, 900 CCA — with a jump pack holding the voltage during the swap so the car keeps its settings. After a deep flat, the modules may need a reset at the dealer.
The brake pedal switch
The car cranks only when it sees the brake pressed. If the switch doesn't report the pedal, START gives ignition but never turns the engine.
Ignition lights come on with the button, but the engine stays still — no click, or just one.
With a normal press, do the brake lights come on? If not, that's your fault. At the switch, pins 1 and 4 should close and pins 2 and 3 open with the pedal down; its fuse is F8, 5 A, in the passenger compartment fuse box.
If the brake lights stay dark with the pedal down, replace the switch.
The order to check them in
The point of the order is money: each step either rules a cause out or makes the next one worth doing. Green is free, amber costs a little, red is the one to arrive at last.
Read the dash before anything else
A flood of warnings, Apply brake and beeping, a key stuck in the slot — think battery. A quiet dash and one clean click — think starter side.
freeMeasure the battery, don't trust its age
12.6 V six hours after charging or driving. If the boot won't open, use the emergency blade from the fob in the lock behind the XK badge on the boot lid.
freeCharge or jump at the boot terminal
Don't clamp onto the battery itself. Behind the black panel on the left of the boot opening there's a remote positive terminal under a rubber cover; the earth lead goes to the bolt on the body panel.
freeBrake lights on
Press the pedal firmly and have someone check that the brake lights work. Dark brake lights mean the car never sees the pedal and will not crank.
freeCheck the starter fuse F19
Engine compartment fuse box, 30 A (25 A on 2006 model-year cars). A blown starter fuse gives the same single click as a dead starter. Check it before the starter comes out.
a few poundsJump leads for two minutes
Still only a click with good power behind it: the battery and the alternator are cleared.
freeProve the starter, then buy
Have it bench-tested at a parts counter. A reman under lifetime warranty can be exchanged free.

The highlighted position is the one the procedure talks about. Pulling a fuse is a stop-gap, never a repair: check what the circuit feeds before you pull it.
