Jaguar XJ (X350) Sat Nav Wrong Position or No Address
These navigation faults rarely need a new navigation unit. A map disc of the wrong age stops address entry, a position hundreds of miles out is a calibration job, and a screen that dims with the headlights is a setting. A black screen with 50 and 51 is a different fault with its own page.

The touchscreen also runs the climate and audio controls, so avoid unofficial map discs: a disc meant for a later model can damage both the navigation and the climate control.
Which one applies to yours depends on your symptoms, your model year and what has already been done to it.
Likely causes, most common first
Read the check cost before the odds: a free check that rules a cause out beats a likely guess that costs money.
A map disc of the wrong age for the unit's software
The disc carries maps and part of the software; the format changed around 2005, and a disc can update the unit's firmware. An older disc in an updated unit shows the map but can't search for addresses.
The map follows the car, but addresses can't be entered and the region field in setup is blank. Sometimes the car starts up in the wrong city.
Read the part number on the disc — the letters at the end give its age. The diagnostic screen can show GPS as working all the while.
A genuine later Jaguar disc, for example about $50. If it carries a firmware update, run it with the engine running and let it finish; it can also be forced from the engineering menu.
The screen dims with the headlights — a setting
By default the display goes to night mode whenever the lights are on, including automatic lights in daytime rain.
The map is hard to read the moment the headlights come on, in daylight too.
Setup → Brightness and Contrast. Pick day or night as a fixed mode (twilight and auto are the other choices), then set brightness with the buttons beside the screen.
Set the mode by hand and the dimming stops. The screen stays weak in strong sun; that is how it was built.
The car's position drifts — recalibrate
If the arrow moves with the car but in the wrong place, the receiver works and the system has lost its reference. A dead receiver or a crashed program doesn't track movement.
The car shows in another state or city, but its arrow moves as you drive. Changing the map region doesn't help.
Use calibration in the navigation menus. If it isn't there, hold PHONE and MENU until a keypad appears, enter 1971, open calibration and drag the map until the road sits under the arrow.
Worth trying before replacing the receiver: calibrate from the hidden menu. If calibration won't hold, check the aerial lead at the navigation computer in the boot.
A menu option has gone after a new disc
Navigation functions come from the disc, so a newer disc can change the menus. One disc version removed the 3D map view on purpose.
The handbook describes the 2D/3D choice, but Display Options doesn't show it.
Nothing to repair. The screen's own software, which also runs climate and audio, is updated only with the dealer tool; the map disc can't restore the option.
No cure — it is designed behaviour. Maps for this system stopped with the 2012 release.

Jagaux Android conversion kit
Keeps the factory screen and puts Android — maps, music, apps — on the NAV button. Climate, menus and audio stay as they were, nothing is cut, and the car can go back to stock at any time. Built to order.

The order to check them in
The point of the order is money: each step either rules a cause out or makes the next one worth doing. Green is free, amber costs a little, red is the one to arrive at last.
Check the display setting
If the only complaint is a dim screen, Setup → Brightness and Contrast is the whole fix.

Its final letters show the release. An early disc in a car that won't take addresses is the prime suspect.

Navigation has F34 (5 A) in the passenger junction box and F51 (10 A) in the boot box. The navigation computer sits under the boot floor on the left; check its aerial plug.
